The parenting class New Jersey requires before your divorce is final

If you have minor children, New Jersey adds one requirement to your divorce that childless couples never encounter: both parents attend a Parents' Education Program before the case concludes. It surprises people, and it is one of the more common reasons a with-children divorce takes longer than expected.

What it is

A short court-administered program — usually a single session — about how divorce affects children and how parents can reduce the damage. It is educational, not therapeutic and not evaluative. Nobody assesses your parenting, and nothing said in it becomes evidence about custody.

The practical details

• The fee is $25 per parent, added at filing. A couple with children therefore pays $300 to file plus $25 for each parent attending.
• Both parents attend, but separately — you are not required to be in the same room, which matters to a lot of people.
• Counties administer it themselves, so format and scheduling vary. Some run it online, some in person.
• Your county Family Division notifies you when and how to attend after the case is filed.

How much time it adds

Realistically a few weeks, depending on how often your county schedules sessions. This is a scheduling delay rather than a legal obstacle, but it runs in parallel with everything else, so the way to avoid it costing you time is simply to attend as soon as you are notified rather than waiting until the rest of the paperwork is done.

What it is not

It is not mediation, it is not counseling, it is not a custody evaluation, and it is not a test you can fail. It is also not a substitute for the parenting plan your agreement needs — that is a separate document in which the two of you set out custody, the parenting-time schedule, and how decisions get made.

If you and the other parent genuinely disagree about custody or parenting time, no class resolves that. That is the point at which each of you should have your own attorney.
